Walking holiday in Lapland – Trekking in National Park and untouched
wilderness areas in Muonio and in Kilpisjärvi
Pallas fells
Experience the arctic land and nature over 300 km above the Arctic Circle, on the top of Europe. This week offers you the best of the Fell Lapland: Pallas fells and Kilpisjärvi wilderness area. While your stay, you can witness the real miracle of the North – the Mid-night sun. The summer in Lapland is short but very intense and full of arctic life.
This trekking holiday is suitable for anyone in average physical shape. The week contains day trips of various length and introduction to the local culture in Finland. The services are provided by local people and the guiding language is English.
Day 1 Arrival to Kittilä airport
Transfer to Muonio, the starting point of the week. Muonio is a small municipality located by the border of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. It is located close to the Swedish border as well. Finland and Sweden are actually separated by a river, Muoniojoki.
Meet and greet your host at Särkijärven Majat, a family run business, where you will be accommodated in a cosy apartment or cottage (2-4 persons). You are accommodated by a lake, where you can go for a swim after sauna or try a traditional rowboat. The view opens directly to the fells you are about to discover.

Day 2 Hiking trip to Keimiö Fjell and fishing (5-6 hours)
After breakfast meeting with your guide and short transfer to the starting point of our trip. Hiking with your local guide to the top of Keimiö fjell from where you can admire the chain of Pallas fjells. (distance 5 km, in total). On the way back, we will walk to the shores of lake Jerisjärvi, rich in fish. By the lake shores there are ancient fishers’ cabins and storage rooms. Your guide will tell about fishing traditions of the area and we will try also fishing with nets.
The guide will prepare lunch by open fire, make coffee and prepare some smoked whitefish for lunch.
Return back to Särkijärven Majat. Sauna, Dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Higlights of Pallas fells – full day hiking trip (17 km)
Breakfast
Today it is time to discover some breath taking views and climb up the nearby fells in the National Park! Everyone packs the picnic lunch in their backpacks before the departure.
Meeting with the guide, short transfer to the starting point of our trip by the border of the National Park. We climb gradually up to the fell above the tree zone. On our way we make breaks, and the guide tells you about the fjell vegetation and animals. We first reach the tiny Montel hut that used be the shelter for the guardian of the forest. Then we continue up the hill a little bit more and then we reach Nammalakuru. A magnificent view opens on the Pallas fjell, what a rewarding feeling! We’ll have a picnic lunch up here and make coffee by the open fire.
From Nammalakuru we will continue the journey towards Pallas. Depending on the group’s physical condition, we may also climb up to Taivaskero before reaching the end point of the trip. On your way you may see many reindeer, flowers and birds depending of the season.
Transfer back to Särkijärven Majat
Sauna, Dinner , Overnight
Day 4 Discover the Hidden Jewell of Lapland – Kilpisjärvi
Breakfast & check-out from Särkijärvi. Transfer by minibus to Kilpisjärvi –driving time ca. 3 hours.
Check in at Kilpisjärven Lomakeskus. Accommodation in spacious and cosy chalets (2-4 persons) equipped with saunas and fully equipped kitchen. In each apartment there is a living room with a TV and sofa.
Lunch in restaurant.
After lunch hiking trip to Saana Fell; ca. 3-4 hours, depending on the group.
Saana Fell is Finland’s 2nd highest fell (1029 m) and from the top opens a magnificent view towards Sweden and Norway. You will be climbing steadily up, first along a path and there is a long staircase. Before reaching the top, the path is a bit rocky and solid walking boots are recommended. On the slopes of the fell grows very vulnerable arctic flowers.

Day 5 Three states in one, hiking along Malla nature reserve – full day hiking trip (16 km)
Breakfast.
Believe it or not, but today we will shortly visit Sweden and Norway too! Before the departure for this adventure everyone packs the picnic lunch in their backpacks. The trip is ca. 16 km long. You need to have solid hiking boots on this trip, because we will cross two small streams of water and some rocky streches.
Meeting with your guide, and transfer to the harbor where Ms Malla is waiting. Departure by Malla boat to the other end of lake Kilpisjärvi which is usually free of ice before end of June! We shall reach the three state border mark by walking. By walking around the mark, you can actually visit Sweden and Norway too!
From the border mark we will start our journey up to the Malla fell. From the border mark, we start gradually walking up to the treeless fjell zone. The first hour will be uphill, but after we are above the tree level, there is no more uphill. This is a nature reserve, full of very precious and protected flowers and plants. Be sure to take your camera with you to capture the moments. On our way we will have picnic lunch. Besides the couple of streams we cross, there will be parts that are rocky, but in general the path is easy to walk. Our journey ends when we reach the road. Transfer back to the village.

Day 6 Return back home
Breakfast, check-out and transfer by minibus to Kittilä airport.
