The land of moose and bear
Welcome to the most Northern part of Sweden, to Kiruna! This is the home for moose, reindeer and bears. Our wildlife is very rich. Wild salmon has its home in our freely running rivers. Here too you can find peace and quietness in small villages or wilderness areas. The municipality is the largest by surface in Sweden, but here too the population is not dense. Saami culture and reindeer herding are also very lively in this region. Many people have relatives in Finland and in the Eastern part of Kiruna the local inhabitants speak Finnish and a dialect called Meän kieli and Saami too. Swedish is the official language.

The town of Kiruna is well known for its mining history and the fact that the center of the town is under a transition period, the buildings will be physically moved away so that the mine can be expanded. In the future you may also embark on space shuttle from Kiruna!

In the East, Kiruna is separated from Finland by border rivers Muoniojoki and Könkämäeno. This is a great river for kayaking and fishing. The both sides of the river have been influenced by a religious movement called Lestadianism. The movement has affected the culture both in Finland and Sweden and you can visit many historical places related to the movement. For example in the Lainio village, in Lainio Vildmark, you can visit an old teaching room.

Nature and culture experiences

A great way to discover the Kiruna area and the local way of life, is to participate to Min Eallin’s Saami programs. You will learn about reindeer herding and the Saami culture in the original environment in the village of Övre Soppero. If you like faster experiences, why not try a husky safari with Huskycompaniet or Lappeasuando. They will take you for a long safari on the Swedish tundraland. Snowshoe hiking and skiing are also environmentally friendly ways to discover the tundra forests and frozen lakes.
In Lainio Vildmark you can learn fly fishing in the summer and enjoy the relaxing environment of the authentic Lappish village.
