From Norway, eight municipalities from Troms and Finnmark counties are taking part. From Finnmark Kautokeino and Alta, from Troms Nordreisa, Kvaenangen, Kåfjord, Skjervöy, Storfjord and Lyngen are participating and financing. The project is also financed by EU’s Interreg IV A North program, Regional Council of Lapland, Norbottens länsstyrelse and Troms Fylke. The Lead Partner of the project is Enontekiön Kehitys Oy from Finland, in Sweden the partner is Kiruna kommun and in Norway the partner is Troms Reiseliv.
The project aims to develop tourism and build a cross-border co-operation network between the member companies. It is important to be able to lengthen the seasons and develop new product packages to be sold in German, French, Dutch and British market. The national markets are also important, and the project aims to raise awareness and image of the whole area.
In Finland the winter season is strong, whereas summer is quiet. In Norway the situation is opposite. The whole region will profit of the co-operation and strengthen the low seasons by offering programs and holiday packages cross the borders. Joint marketing actions and developing competences and skills of the actors in the tourism business are part of projects actions and objectives. The product development is done in co-operation with selected tour operators.
The region belongs to the most Northern part of the world above the Arctic Circle where people live and even practice agriculture. The Arctic culture and Saami culture is spread all over the region. Arctic nature, snow guarantee, tundra, fells, mountains and very changing landscapes are destination’s strengths. Region Arctica’s target segments are customers who seek authentic nature experiences, wellbeing and strength from the nature and who are interested in learning about culture and the Arctic way of life.
The project started in summer 2009 and runs until the end of year 2011.
