Arctic nature is very vulnerable because of the long and cold winter, and short summer. The nature has not a lot of time to recover and grow during the short summer. In Enontekiö, 75% of the surface and nature is protected area. The soil is not very thick here and the land erodes easily, that’s why it is important to follow the ready-made and marked paths, if you go for example for a hiking trip.
Our flora and fauna is of course specially adapted to the cold climate. Forests in the Southern part of Region Arctica belong to taiga forests, but further up on the sub-arctic area there is no more coniferous trees, just small birches. On the tundra plains there is no trees because the tundra land is deeply frozen. The tundra is also exciting landscape with marshes, lakes and mountains.
What makes Region Arctica so special is the true variety in landscapes and land. Travel from the forest areas to tundra and mountains and shores of the fjords where the vegetation is different from the cold inland area.
Reindeer, moose, bear, wolverine, lynx, wolf, fox and the arctic fox live around here. Semi-domestic reindeers are of course easiest to see when you go out for a nature trip, there is over
150 000 reindeer in our destination. On the coast of Norway the birdlife is magnificent and we organize bird watching trips. Eagles, owls, Atlantic Puffins on the coast, swans, cranes belong to our typical birds.
Fishers are fond of the fresh and clean water. The rivers, lakes and fjords offer a wonderful variety of arctic fish. Salmon, trout, arctic char, pike, perch, white fish, cod, Atlantic halibut are all delicious fish that you can catch. We are happy to take you for a fishing trip!
Our nature is rich in wild berries too. Blueberries and cloudberries are ripe in August, and anyone can pick them for free from the forests. Lingonberries and cranberries come later, and their season is in September and October.
