The traditional way of travelling in Lapland
Reindeer have been used traditionally to transport people and carriages during winter. In the old times when the reindeer herding was practiced without the help of motor vehicles, families packed all their belongings to sleds that the reindeers pulled. Today, in Norway, only the Saami people can own and herd reindeers. In Finland, besides the Saami people, also Finnish people may be reindeer owners. The same applies to Sweden, where both Saami and Swedish people can own reindeer.
Reindeer are semi-domesticated animals and their herding is one of the most important livelihoods in this region. In addition to learning to drive the sled, your local host will also tell you about the history of reindeer herding and teach you to cast a Lappish lasso!
Another option, is to go for a snowmobile safari with the reindeer herders and go to search for the grazing reindeer troops. These troops may consist of thousands of reindeers, depending on the area.
