Northern Saami language is spoken all over Region Arctica's area. However, the Saami people are a minority everywhere else than in Kautokeino, where 95% of the population speaks Saami. So Kautokeino can be called the heart of the Saami culture, in this region.
There are different aspects to Saami culture, and not all the Saami people practice reindeer herding. There are fisher Saamis as well on the Norwegian coast.
Saami people are proud of their culture and are happy to introduce it to you too. You are welcome to join guided safaris that take you out to wilderness where the reindeer are grazing and you can assist in their herding. Or how would it sound to make a trip to the area of Sea Saami by the Arctic Ocean learn about their daily livelihoods?
A great way to get to know the Saami culture, is to participate to numerous festivals organized in Kautokeino. Easter, film and whitefish festivals are the biggest Saami events in Kautokeino. In Enontekiö, in March, is organized Marian Päivät, a Saami culture festival. In Kautokeino’s Easter festival and in Marian Päivät is organized reindeer races too and many other program too.
